In Hindu religion today's date marks Naag Panchami, a day of worshipping  reptiles and dedicated to the serpent god, Nag. This day falls on mid of rainy season and tracks the arrival of cluster of festivals including Dashain, the biggest festival of Hindus. 

This day is celebrated by sticking posters of serpent in the main door of house, replacing previous year's picture or poster. The main doors and gateways are washed and in muddy houses, they are smeared by cow dung. After then priests stick serpent pictures on the walls of main doors or gateways by using cow dung. Then the picture is worshipped offering some clean and fresh dubo (Cynodon dactylon), flowers, keshari (colours), sweets and varieties of foods like rice and milk pudding, rice bread made in ghee, etc., lava (roasted paddy), oats grains, sesame seeds, water and specially raw milk of cow. It is highly believed that worshipping serpent king can protect people from snakes. As worshipping a real snake infront is a risky devotion, posters, idols, etc. of snake deity are worshipped. The origin of this festival is linked with Mahabharata (the holy book of Hindu religion). There's an interesting story connected with this festival. 

Furthermore, Hindu people also believe that today the tenth and last incarnation of Lord Vishnu "Kalki Avatar" is about to born, which according to religious texts, is the incarnation for ending iniquity and all sinner people of this era (Kali Yug) and again establish religion and equity among humans on Earth.

In Hindu religion, as they worship snake deity, killing of snakes is believed to be an inexcusable sin. 

In a nutshell, may this day strengthen ecosystem and help in persuading greenery.
