Naga Panchami- A festival related to snake

Naga Panchami is popular and traditional worship of snakes that is usually done by Hindus. It is mostly done at Nepal, India and those countries where Hindus live. According to Hindu calendar, It falls on fifth day of bright half of lunar month of Srawan (July or August). This year, Nag Panchami is held on July 25, 2020.

In this day a stone, wood or painting of snakes is bath with milk and other necessary festivities items like sweets, flowers, lamps. Live snakes ie. Cobras are worshipped by offering milk. On this day, people visit temples dedicated to snakes and worship them. Shiva temples are also very favoured places for veneration as snakes are considered to be dear to him.

Devnagarik Mantra that is recited is below while worshipping.

नाग प्रीता भवन्ति शान्तिमाप्नोति बिअ विबोह्

सशन्ति लोक मा साध्य मोदते सस्थित समः

In romal alphabet:

Naga preeta bhavanti shantimapnoti via viboh

Sashanti lok ma sadhya modate shashttih samh.

I find this way and belief of worshipping snake as an important factor for people not killing Snakes. They belief that snakes are God. Below is photo how I worshipped this day. Let me know if you do the same at your place or county.

Here is short report I wrote few days ago in World report about Snake.

Snakes are the carnivore¡¯s reptile animals and have important role in maintaining environment. The appearance is different for different type of snake covered with skin and legless. They are expected to live for maximum of 20 years. They feed on frogs, rats and insects, etc. The snakes are predators but sometimes can also be prey for other predators. The snake is important from ecological point of view to the healthcare industries.

Importance of Snakes for ecosystem:

a. Population Controller/ Pest control: As snake is a carnivore they eat number of prey. This helps in controlling population. Rodents is an excellent example which reproduces exponentially in absence of predators.

b. Prey for other creatures¡¯/ Balance ecosystem: Snakes are the prey for birds like hawks, etc. Thus helps in food chain.

c. Economic Importance: Snake provides entertainment in zoos to humans and get to know about its living pattern.

d. Anti- venom can be produced through the snake.

End of report, Thank You!
