[Monthly report] Weather alert
It is monsoon season here at Nepal. Above 70% rainfall occurs within this 4-month During monsoon this year heavy rainfall followed by thunderstorm is causing landslides and flood in different parts of the country. Water level in Karnali, Narayani and Koshi which are larger rivers of Nepal is above danger level. Although this seems to be a darker side of nature, it is mostly invited by human activities. Places where road construction, sand mining are hit harder. The fact is we can never fight with nature but should learn to live in harmony with it.
Few weeks back I received a SMS alert late night about possibility of heavy rainfall and chance of flood in river nearby by house. The SMS was sent by Weather forecasting division and I was among thousands to receive alert from the area. Considering the message and weather forecast many houses nearby river moved upwards to avoid flood. Following morning a heavy rainfall occurred and river entered the village causing massive flood. The Flood caused heavy loss of properties but no human casualty was recorded. Post flood locals and government is planning to stop sand mining and conduct afforestation programme around river bank. Thanks to weather forecasting division and SMS alert. On further research I came to know about websites, radio and television alerts, message bots customized for weather forecasting nearby us.
The perfect solution of heavy rainfall and flood is not these alerts but at the same time this small piece of information helped to save many human lives. When nature and human fight each other the war often ends with heavy loss on human side.
