Monthly Report Marine ecosystem and threats

by Sachin Regmi | 21-06-2020 00:47

Monthly report,
I live in Nepal which lies in southern Asia, it is landlock country. That¡¯s why I cannot experience marine environment first hand, In return we have large number of freshwater sources running north to south towards Indian ocean. My opinion in this report is based on internet research and experience shared by my international friends.
With 2/3rd occupancy on earth, aquatic ecosystem is largest. Majority of aquatic ecosystem is marine ecosystem which is distinguished by water with high salt content. Sea and Oceans are together called marine ecosystem. Additionally, marshes, estuaries, mangrove forest, sea grass beds are all part of the ecosystem. Scientific evidences support evolution of first lifeform in sea water. Thus, it is precursor of all living beings on earth.
Recent Century due to overpopulation and industrialization we are disturbing marine ecosystem to largest scale. The major threats to marine ecosystem are ocean dumping of sewage, chemicals, industrial waste and other debris. Hazardous wastes and plastic like non-degradable pollutant causes long lasting impression. Algal bloom is resultant of agricultural wastes carried by running rivers along their way. These rivers are primary source of all pollutants and debris depositing in the sea and oceans. The water pollution threatens aquatic lifeforms and force them to extinction. Increasing encroachment to sea beds and surface disturbs the natural water current and affects life. Aquatic transportation emits NOX and SOX which are both harmful oxides of nitrogen and Sulphur. Acidic compounds like CO2 when dissolved in water increases PH which is lethal to aquatic animals and plants.
Better late than Never. We must stand for a cause now to minimize marine pollution because united we stand divided we fall.
