[Thematic report] Wildlife in Fernando de Noronha

by Giulia Tavares Madeira Pinto | 17-06-2020 20:33

Hey everyone!!

In this month, our mentor told us to write about somethnig relate to the World Oceans Day, so I choose to talk about the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha in Brazil.

The archipelago is in the Atlantic Ocean and the islands have volcanic origins and never have been connect to the brazilian land. Due to this, all the animals and organisms that lives there became from the sea or flighting by the air.

For exemple, in there are so many species of turtles like the: green turtles and the Hawksbill turtles. The first one uses the archipelago to reproduction and the last one uses for feeding and growth. These animals are protected by the TAMAR project, it controls the areas of the island which have high concentration of turtles since 1987.

Also in the archipelago, is protected some birds, crabs, one specie of star fish and the Rotator dolphins (native of the area). The island is the home of largest populations of migratory birds, so, the population of birds is increased in times of migration.

The marine life is rich and we can found endemic species and much more like: parrotfishes, Sargent majors, angelfishes, triggerfishes, morays eels, groupers, as well as octopuses and lobsters. In adding to this, Fernando de Noronha is also an insular nursery area for lemon sharks and nurse sharks.

There is so much more wild life in Fernando de Noronha, but I will can't relate that in this report, but I invite you to reasearch more and, maybe, support one of the projects for conservation of the fauna in Fernando de Noronha.

Green cheers from Brazil!!
