Thematic Report - Marine Environment

by Justice Obiri | 12-06-2020 13:06

Marine habitats are habitats that support marine life. Marine environments support all habitats that support marine life; they are dependent on each other. When there is a disturbance in a marine habitat, marine environment becomes disturbed. This means marine life such as fishes, corals, kelp, mangroves and seagrasses depend so much on their environment for survival.

It must be noted that marine life does so much for the survival of living things on land. They serve as food which provides the basic need of nutrition which is an important life process. They serve as medicine, we get fuel from marine life, they also serve as a source of recreation. It is therefore important to preserve marine environment to ensure sustainability within the ecosystem of marine environment.

As humans as we are, some actions of ours are dangerous to marine life and we must find a way to curtail or stop it. On sea, oil is spilled into the sea without considering its effects. Oil spillage is so bad a practice. It contaminates the sea causing a disturbance in the marine habitat which would directly affect the marine environment. Organisms in such an environment of spilled oil, would die or worse off, develop diseases which could be transmitted to humans when they are consumed. Growing seagrasses and corals also die off.

Some fish farmers resort to using chemicals and explosives for fishing which is another bad practice. How safe are fished who have been harvested using chemicals or explosives? This poses a danger to humans and the marine environment as a whole. As humans, we stand at risk of food poisoning and death. We must therefore endeavour to refrain from such unhealthy practices of harvesting for fishes.

Open defecation is another problem here in Africa, I always feel ashamed to talk about this but I think it is the only way to help find a solution to this. Open defecation is a big problem that has to be curtailed very soon for the survival of Africa. Due to lack of washrooms in residential areas, most people are forced to release faecal matter directly into bushes or any water body around. In bushes, when it rains it carries these faecal matter is washed into the waterbodies and it must be put on records that this is the main cause of cholera and diarrhoea in Africa. These same waterbodies serve as the only source of water for towns or villages they are located. So when the water becomes polluted with any disease, everybody gets infected as well.

You only feel how sharp the knife is when it is cutting you in person, let¡¯s endeavour to make life better for all of us by practicing sustainable fishing methods that would not endanger the marine environment and directly, us as human beings.
