by Gian Veloz | 26-09-2023 10:41

Introduction:

Energy security objectives in the Dominican Republic:

In addition to maintaining a reliable energy infrastructure, we care about preserving and promoting adequate exploitation of the minerals found in the national territory for the benefit of citizens.

As a public administration body, its function is to govern the national energy system, as well as the electric, renewable, nuclear, natural gas and mining energy subsectors;

  • Formulate, adopt, direct and coordinate the policy regarding the rational use of energy and the development of alternative energy sources, as well as promote, organize and ensure the development of programs for the rational and efficient use of energy.

  • Ensure national security in energy terms, from the policy of storage of supplies, infrastructure for their efficient distribution and transmission, design of the ideal composition of the energy matrix and plans for its achievement and all related issues.

  •  Design plans and projects for the construction of new strategic energy infrastructures related to fuel transportation, storage, refining and gas pipelines, oil pipelines and transmission and distribution networks.

    The Dominican Republic has had an outstanding economic performance during the last decades, being one of the countries with the highest growth in Latin America, reaching around 5.5% of the gross domestic product (GDP) per year between 1991 and 2013; However, this growth comes with an increase in energy demand, whose efficient and competitive supply has remained a major national security concern for the country for more than half a century, that is why is important to determine the socioeconomic cost of the inefficiency of the Dominican energy sector for national development.

The institutional composition of the energy sector of the The Dominican Republic is essentially made up of the entire regulatory block that governs the matter and the state and non-state organizations involved in activities intended for any of the stages relating to the production, transportation, management, distribution and marketing of energy resources throughout the country.

Conclusion:

As the Dominican Republic moves toward a more energy-secure future, it is essential to continue driving investment in clean energy, promote technological innovation, and encourage public education and awareness on the responsible use of energy. Energy diversification and reducing dependence on fossil fuels are key steps to ensure the country's economic and environmental stability in the decades to come.
