[THEMATIC REPORT] Calculating the environmental cost of smoking

by Meena Pandey | 21-05-2020 02:02

This time I have brought the human activities and habit have brought the arduous effects in the environment. Most often, now days many youngsters and even the old people are addicted to smoking.
No one has given their few times even to make analysis of their bad habit to the environment. As we know, nicotine in cigarette invites different cardio- vascular diseases, stokes, lung cancer, mouth cancer. It is also the preventable cause of death in the world. Not only the human health, it also affects the environmental components. The smoke that comes from cigarette pollutes the air. The cigarette butts when thrown carelessly in the environment, it also cause the land pollution. The toxic chemicals present in the cigarette when seeped in the soil, it kills millions of microbes. The decomposers when killed by the cigarettes seeps, it affects the process of decomposition of the natural eco-system.The major component of the cigarette is tobacco. Thus, for the increasing demand of the tobacco, many rainforests are being cut down. The trees, which are the significant component of the environment when chopped, we are definitely in threat. This causes the increase in soil erosion, extinction of different life forms and also cause increase in average global temperature. The entire process of cultivating, curing, and transporting tobacco needs the use of large amount of chemical and other toxic materials. Aldicarb, which is the major component of the cigarette making is highly toxic to plants, animals and when the runoff reaches to the sources of the water, it cause massive loss of water animals. The industrial manufacture of cigarette produces a lot of smoke to the environment which causes increase in air pollutants.

The filters are made of cellulose acetate, sourced from plastic, are photodegradable can be broken down by UV light but still take an extended period to break down. When they are thrown in the land, it causes reduction in the yield potential of the crop.

When pets are outdoors they do so many things like sniffing through garbage and the streets. This puts the pets, dogs and cats, at a high risk of ingesting cigarette butts lying on the ground as litter. The consequence can be damaging and may even kill the pet. Second hand smokers are also greatly affected by the smoking. Second hand smoker can be pets, human. When cigarette butts are randomly thrown, wild animals are risk in consuming them.

We hear the news of forest fire every year. The small negligence of throwing used cigarette in arid and dried land can cause the forest fire which is responsible for huge habitat loss and loss of biodiversity with the increment in air pollution.
