In a significant stride toward sustainable energy solutions, a Peruvian team represented South America in the twelfth edition of the global competition "Go Green," backed by the multinational corporation Schneider Electric in 2022. This prestigious competition encourages students from around the world to propose and develop innovative energy solutions for a sustainable future. Andina, A. (2022, June 17). It offers an ingenious approach to harnessing renewable energy sources in high-altitude Andean regions by cultivating microalgae, harnessing solar energy, and utilizing carbon dioxide (CO2). Andrés Díaz Zamora, a team member and a student of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the National University of Engineering (UNI), expressed their excitement about representing South America and their homeland. He stated, "We wanted to demonstrate to the world that Peruvians have the capacity to provide innovative solutions to the world's most pressing issues." The project was developed in collaboration with Angie Porras Valencia, a student of Genetics and Biotechnology at the National University of San Marcos (UNMSM); Benjamin Díaz Zamora, a graduate in the same field; and Yessenia Yauri Huaman, a Biology graduate from the National University of San Cristóbal de Huamanga. How Does It Work? The Illapa photobioreactor utilizes solar light and ambient CO2 to cultivate microalgae on a large scale. Besides generating electrical energy, it produces biomass and reduces environmental CO2. "To achieve microalgae growth in the photobioreactor, stable cultivation conditions had to be maintained, including temperature control, pH levels, the appropriate concentration of oxygen, ambient CO2, and the provision of necessary nutrients," explained biotechnologist Benjamin Díaz. The Peruvian team emphasized that this project aims to decrease reliance on fossil fuels for electricity generation. Furthermore, microalgae cultivation, similar to plants, harnesses ambient CO2 for photosynthesis. Consequently, the Illapa photobioreactor presents a sustainable alternative for energy production. "The benefits of this project addresses two primary issues we aim to resolve. Firstly, the increasing CO2 emissions resulting from economic growth and population development. Secondly, the lack of reliable but sustainable energy," noted Andrés Díaz. During the regional stage of the competition in 2022, the Peruvian team presented a comprehensive plan for adapting the use of the photobioreactor to the country's energy needs and social context. They also developed a supply chain framework and an economic model that allowed the project to scale, from small to large investments. The "Green Thunder-Illapa" project is designed to provide electricity to areas without access to the electrical grid, particularly in high-altitude rural Andean zones with ample solar radiation. To supply electricity under these conditions, the Illapa photobioreactor operates in an "off-grid" system, meaning it doesn't require a connection to the electrical distribution network. "As technology continues to evolve and the efficiency of these systems increases, they could be applied in hybrid and on-grid systems," clarified Díaz. A Valuable Contribution Though the team did not emerge as winners in the global finals of the "Go Green" competition, their innovative energy solution garnered recognition and respect. They made a valuable contribution to the field of sustainable energy, highlighting Peru's potential for innovative solutions to global challenges. As of 2023, their journey serves as an inspiring example of dedication to a sustainable future, and their pioneering work continues to inspire others in the field of renewable energy.
