Majitho ( Rubia Cardifolia) - A medicinal plant

Majitho (Rubia Cordifolia)

Rubia Cordifolia is a perennial flowering plant..It is called as majitho in Nepali..It is a species of flowering plant in coffee family.This plant can grow up to 1 m height. The evergreen leaves are 5- 10 cm long , broad , produced in whorls of 4-7 star-like  at central stem.It climbs with tiny hooks at leaves and stems. The fruits are red to black in color.

The roots have antibacterial action ,inhibiting the growth of staphylococcus aureus , S. epidermis , Pneumococci etc.The roots are used initially in treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding , internal and external haemorrhage , bronchitis , stone in kidney , gall and bladder.

Stems are used in treatment of blood disorders.

Leaves are used as a poison antidote and to treatmouth sores and intestinal problem such as dirrahoea. Leaves are also used for wound healing and to stop bleeding.Tye leaves ash are used to treat mastitis and itchy skin.

This plant is also used an importance source of red pigment. Root contain an anthraquinone called purpurin that gives it red color as textile dye.
