[Thematic report] Calculating the environmental cost of a book

by Giulia Tavares Madeira Pinto | 17-05-2020 08:30

Hey everyone?

Hope everything is fine with you and yours dears in this pandemic time, it'll pass soon!

In this month, our mentor told us to make a post about how much costs an human activitie to the environmental. So, I choose my best friend in the quarantine: the book.
Let's find how much it costs!!

At first, to dimension the costs of it, anually in US, more than 100 millions of trees are destroyed to produce books and newspapers it results in a large waste water and a sizable carbon footprint.
Also, to produce books and newspapers, 153 billion gallons of waters are used each year. The ink used to print it releases volatile organic compounds into the atmosphere, which can aggravate smog.
After produced, the books needs to be transported to the bookstores, to do that - whatever it is the transport - happens the burning of fossil fuels that are extremely dangerous to the environmental.
The good point of the books is that they last a lifetime and can be shared with many people (this is amazing about books), but to be reclyced, the decomposition of books will produce the twice of emissions of the manufacturing process.

It is alarming, but are anothers solutions to the books, like the e-readers!!
Let's take care of the planet with our small actions and suport the green economy!!

Green cheers from Brazil!
