Thematic Report:] Calculating the environmental cost of one of human activities: Plastic production and pollution

by Bal krishna Pandey | 17-05-2020 16:42

Among the items created by humans, the plastic bag is one that's found all over from mount Everest to the foothills of the ocean. Today, plastic carry bags are affected by tourer places, beaches, rivulets, fields and barns, everywhere within and outdoors the land. We have to go to the market as soon as a sound is made in our ears, we get up and stand up. There is no hassle of carrying a bag if you have pocket money. This mess was earlier when the plastic bag was not so popular. Reach the market If you want to buy then buy. The shopkeeper will give the purchased item in a plastic bag. Hold it in your hand and bring it home. Fear not to fall and not get wet. Take the goods out of the plastic bag as soon as you reach home. Finish using polythene, throw it wherever you want but just think, the plastic bags thrown out prevent the water from flowing into the drain and moving with water.

This is an example of our daily activities. researchers say developed and more educated countries pollute their environment with plastics per person. Keeping in mind the thematic topic for this month, I am going to show some of the data and chart on plastic pollution.

Cumulative global plastics production, 1950 to 2015

chart

Above chart shows Cumulative global plastics production in the world, 1950 to 2015 where there is constantly increase in plastic production annually by about 200% since 1950.(Cumulative global production of plastics, measured in tonnes.)

Global plastic waste by disposal, 1980 to 2015

chart

The above chart Estimates of the proportion of plastic waste discarded, recycled and incinerated based on data in Geyer et al. (2017). In 2015, an estimated 55 percent of global plastic waste was discarded, 25 percent was incinerated, and 20 percent recycled whereas in 1980, data show recycling and incineration of plastic was negligible.

Global mismanaged plastic by region, 2010

data
The pie chart above shows mismanaged plastic wastes distributed globally in 2010. East and pacific Asia reason dominates to other reason by huge difference in percentage. South Asia contributes more than 5 times less than East Asia and Pacific.

Though the practical knowledge about plastic pollution is increasing among the people in Nepal theses days, they are still not satisfied with its management as compared to increased level pf production. Yes, plastic is cheap, tolerable and easy is use but people should be aware of its negative impact on environment. I think we should be more focused on awareness and encourage alternative use of plastics. Like we can use bamboo bottles instead in plastic which is the example set by Government of Sikkim in India.
