Push pull poly cropping

by Heemani Singh | 14-05-2020 16:03

Push pull poly cropping is an effective and ecofreindly way to control insect and pest in our crop Feild.
Push pull technology is a strategy for controlling agricultural pest by using repellant "push" plants and trap "pull " plants. For example cereal crops like maize are often infested by stem borers.Grasses like Napier grass planted around the perimeter of crop attract and trap the pest whereas other plants like Desmodium planted between rows of maize repel the pests and save the main crop from pest.

The pull technique approach is to protect the main crop by attracting and trapping pest like stem borers. The grasses are planted in the border around the maize or sorghum feilds where imavding adult moths become attracted to chemicals emmited by grass themselves.

The push technique approach is to protect the main crop as some plants are planted between the rows of maize or sorghum.Desmodium plant has repellant properties as it emit such chemical which repel stemborer , moths  and drive them away from main crop.

Desmodium is intercropped with cereal crops with an attractive trap crop such as Napier grass at the border. Stem borers are repelled from main crop and are simultaneously attracted to trap crop.

This ecofreindly technique will lead to less use of insectide and pesticide and the environment will also be safe.
