Deforestation can be defined as the cutting down of trees, or the destruction of forest. Forests cover more than 30% of the Earth's land surface. Worldwide, forests provide 13.4 million people with jobs in the forest sector, and another 41 million people have jobs related to forests. Although trees and forest are so much important to us, the deforestation is quite high the world. The world¡¯s rain forests could completely vanish in a hundred years at the current rate of deforestation. The Earth loses 18.7 million acres of forests per year, which is equal to 27 soccer fields every minute, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The rate of deforestation equals to loss of 27 football fields every minute. If the current rate of deforestation continues, it will take less than 100 years to destroy all the rainforests on the earth. The scale of tree destruction, much of it done illegally, poses a grave threat to tackling both climate change and the massive global decline in wildlife. The World Bank estimates that about 3.9 million square miles (10 million square km) of forest have been lost since the beginning of the 20th century. Causes of Deforestation: • Agriculture and over grazing of cattles • Development Activities • Commercial use of forest products like wood and Mining • Forest Fires Impacts of Deforestation • Increased Soil Erosion and landslides • Desertification of land and loss of soil fertility • Disruption of water cycles resulting Drought and Flood • Loss of Habitat of wild lives and reduced biodiversity • Climate Change • Disruption of Livelihoods Solutions: • Afforestation: Lets plant trees • Awareness of people • Implementation of strict rules and regulation https://wwf.panda.org/our_work/forests/deforestation_causes2/ https://www.conserve-energy-future.com/causes-effects-solutions-of-deforestation.php |
