Experience on participation in Political Literacy for Young Women

by Asmita Bhusal | 09-05-2020 01:33

Participation in online workshop- " Political Literacy for Young Women"

Realising the fact that youths of Nepal (especially girls) are not exposed to Politics and governance and its immense urgency in our country's context, a student, currently pursuing an executive course : Leadership, Organising and Action, designed her project as an online course entitled "Political Literacy" for young girls aged 18-30 years to help increase their vocabulary of knowledge regarding politics.
The project was organized and structured to develop a basic foundation of politics and its mechanism which would allow young females to be responsible voters. It was the first edition of the project therefore the organising team emphasized girls with little to no knowledge of politics. The broader vision of the project was to escalate the interest of young females in politics and the emergence of them as proficient female leaders of tomorrow. Though I had interest in politics, I didn't have any knowledge about the basic ideologies of
politics and I feel so glad that I got shortlisted for the course.
The literary class started from April 26 and lasted up to May 7.
Political literacy is necessary not only because you want to be in active politics but also to be an aware voter. I learnt not only about basic concept of politics but also about gender issues. We were able to understand and envisage the scenario of women status on politics as well as other executive levels. Though the status of representation of nepalese women in politics is comparatively greater than major developed countries like USA, women still are not given leading position in executive levels and even if they are given, the power they possess is male driven in most of the cases. Many famous Political figures as well as intellectual personalities were invited during the workshop in order to teach us and share their ups and downs.  In a nutshell, the workshop was helpful enough to broaden my horizon of understanding about politics and women issues.
