Festivals of Nepal

by Asmita Bhusal | 26-04-2020 15:46

NAMASTE EVERYONE!!
Today a festival named "Akshye Tritiyaa" is being celebrated in Nepal. In Hindu religion ,this day is an auspicious occasion of remembering the day of marriage of great lord Shiva and goddess Parvati.
The reason I want to share this festival among you here in this platform is the accent of this festival towards utilizing indigenous and nearly forgetten crop, Barley. At this day, people eat flour of dryfried barley mixed with sugar or its derivatives and some condiments like clove, pepper, etc.and sugar mixed water as offering.
Barley is an indigenous crop of Nepal with so many health benefits. Barley is also used to grow "Jamara" during dashain but we have been failing to understand its importance and use for maintaining sound health. Sprouted barley consists of many micro nutrients. This can be grinded and mixed with vegetables and pulses and feed our children as nutritious diet. Barley can also be mixed with other crops like buckwheat and millet flour to make pudding, soup and bread.
As this festival falls during hot season, there's a religious belief that serving flour of dryfried barley and sweet water would bestow us with the blessings equal to saving a life.
Every small things teach us something to respect our nature and so do our festivals.
Thank you everyone.
