[Thematic Report] Chemistry in our daily life.

by Claudia Marin | 22-04-2020 10:22

During my secondary, I remember a meaninful phrase from my chemistry teacher, and he said that everything around us contains chemicals but until then I still didn't understand the magnitude of his words. As time went by, looking around me, I could see that this statement was true, for as I delved into the details, this was more than undeniable. I then delivered that the chemistry was not as frightening as the media showed us, generalizing that it polluted our environment and worse, harmed our health. It is true that they were not totally wrong, however, the image presented was not the right one, because it grouped the good with the bad in the same box, highlighting only the negative of it.

Regarding the good, it can be evidenced that something simple as the sun's rays can turn out to be a source of vitamin D for the proper functioning of our body, emphasizing the skin. This wonder of nature is not only shown in that, since a current example of improvement for life and health is chloroquine, which is extracted from the cinchona tree, and that lately is being used in medicine to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Apart from the natural intervention, it is also worth emphasizing that certain chemical products, elaborated by humans, favour the care and conservation of the environment. For instance, the new figuration of plastic bags, created with the purpose of early decomposition, have had a positive impact on the development of trying to reduce environmental pollution. On the other hand, the presence of the greenhouse effect is of vital importance for balancing the global temperature and not entering into a climate crisis due to the low temperatures that the absence of heat could entail.

In that way, we come to the conclusion that our lives are surrounded by chemicals that benefit not only the environment but also humanity. However, the continuous and excessive use of these could affect both sides, altering the natural and biological order. For that reason, I emphasize a popular phrase that reiterates that over-consumption is harmful, referring to the fact that its consideration should be applied in all fields.
