World Earth Day 2020- Reduction in Pollution amidst the Covid19 crisis

by Meghana Fessy | 22-04-2020 19:25

Happy World Earth Day to everyone!

One-third of the world is under lockdown as a response to the coronavirus pandemic.Of course, the novel virus can be battled through social distancing. Air traffic is down, fewer cars are on the road, and factories are closed; this means that air pollution has drastically decreased in many parts of the world.

Let's just be optimistic about the fact that amidst this  crisis the earth is rejuvenating itself. In Italy, India and many other countries animals roam the streets or you can even spot swans in the Venice canal (or so I've read about in the news). The short term effects are pretty striking, though it may not last long.
New Delhi, India's capital is one of the world's most polluted cities.Right now, the air so much more cleaner than it has seen in decades. This is, in fact, the longest spell of clean air on record.

Jalandhar, Punjab woke up to a view of the Himalayas after 30 years which was till now not visible  due to the high pollution levels,

While the world is battling the pandemic, we can indeed appreciate the beauty of our earth which we humans have degraded beyond redemption.

Let us inculcate sustainable practices even amdist the lockdown while most of us are at homes. Reduce wastage and consumption.Switch off electricity when not in use.In short, let us uptake the 5RS- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repurpose, Refuse. These principles are well known to us.Yet, how many of us actually do take it up in their everyday lives. While making any choice, we can make environment friendly decisions.

'Small acts create Big impacts". Is it so hard to plant a seedling and nurture it? If all of us, on this special occasion, take up the initiative to plant a seed and take care of it, then imagine how many trees can we plant if our entire population does it! Probably approx 7 billion?
Each small individual effort when done by everyone can add up to something more drastic.

So, Stay Home! Stay Safe!

and once again Happy Earth Day!!! :)
