Greeting to everyone!!!

Seeing these beautiful flower (Periwinkle) around my home made me seek about the importance of it. And now sharing it with my tunza members.

         Catharanthus roseus(Madagascar periwinkle) is found in Tropical, sub-tropical & sub-temprate climate. It prfers light sandy loam soil rich in humus content. It can be propagated through seed or by cutting. Flowers may be purple, blue or white. It contain more than 100 alkaloids  distributed in all parts of the plant. Vincristine, Vinblastine, Catharanthine from leaves and Ajmalicine, Raubacine, Reserpine from roots are commercially important alkaloids.

1. The leaves are used as antidiabetic, Sedative and hypotensive(lowering blood pressure).

2. vinblastine sulphate extracted from periwinkle is used in treatment of cancer of lungs, breast & testes.

3. The plant has been widely used as antimalarial, anti-dysentric, diuretic (increasing the amount of urination), purgative ( controlling vomiting).
