FLOODS AND FAMINES

A Flood is nothing but an excess of water. Heavy rain causes an excess of water. The melting of snow is another cause. Floods famine are a common future of Nepalese life. Sometimes, we get too much of rain and sometimes we get no rain at all. When we get no rain, crops cannot grow in large part of Nepal and famine occurs. On the other hand, when we get too much of rain, our cattle and crops are destroyed and washed away. In either case, a country suffers.

The truth is that flood and famines are a regular feature of Nepalese economy. Every year there are floods in some parts and famine in other parts. Sometimes, there is famine all over the country. Sometimes, our crops are destroyed by heavy floods. These floods come every year and make the people still poorer. In this age of food problem, flood is the greatest curse. During the monsoon our districts in the Terai, and some other hilly districts become the victims of floods very badly. During dry season, there is always famine in the districts like Jumla, Humala, Mugu, Dolpa, Kalikot, Bajhang, Bajura. There is famine in these districts during dry season. Moreover, these districts are not easily accessible as there is no transport facility. These are Roadless districts. These districts get suffered from famine very badly. Sometimes, these districts suffer from floods too.

When there is famine the government distributes grains and provides farmers with other assistances. When there is flood government should provide alternate sites for their residence and provides food for hungry people. The assistance provided by the government of Nepal to these flood suffers is not enough. The government should provide these sufferers with the food and settlement. There is a prime ministers Relief Fund and there are other several funds to provide help in any national calamity. Both floods and famine are indeed great national calamities.

Floods and famines are such natural and national calamities that plague us every year. There were great floods in 2043 B.S. and 2050 B.S. in Nepal when many field and farms got destroyed and thousands of men and cattle lost their lives. There were floods in Ramechhap Okhaldhunga, Khotang, Siraha, Saptari etc. last year (in 2059 B.S.)

There was great loss of life and property. Many people cattle lost their lives and fields and farms were washed away. It is the duty of government to take preventive measure against famine. Floods should be controlled by building dams arc. rivers, canals, and wells should be dug up to supply water in case of failure of rains farmers should be taught scientific farming techniques. And Different relief societies should be set up.
