GIS

GIS stands for Graphical Information system. GIS are the tools that deal with special data. They have the potential to collects, store, analyze, retrieve and display spatial data and it produce geographic information. A commonly accepted definition of GIS is ¡® A system of hardware, data, people, organizations and institutional arrangements for collecting , storing , analyzing, and disseminating information about areas of the earth.

In short, GIS are computer based system that can deal any type of information about features that can be referenced by geographical location. These systems are capable of handling both location data and attribute data about earth features. For example, a gis might contain not only a map of locations of the road but also a data base descriptor about each road.

GIS has many applications, some of them are:

a. Visualization of special data:

GIS has capacity to produce attractive maps in relatively short time. the visualization helps planner and decision makers to understand large volumes of statics data quickly. Further, it helps to perceive the spatial pattern of a partial feature.

b. Data management

GIS are useful tools. They can bring data from different source onto a common reference base thus allowing the operator to relate base data to each other. For example base map, GPS data, satellite data & the field data can be present in a single data.

c. Analytical Modeling
