Colony Collapse Disorder

by Prajwal Shrestha | 25-03-2020 13:47

Colony Collapse Disorder(CCD) is a phenomenon where a large number of worker bees leave their hive, large amount of food and pollen reserve, and a few nurse bees to care for the remaining immature bees and queen or simply large scale loss of worker bees. It was first reported in the United States in 2006/07 when in two winters there occurred a large scale loss of worker bees causing weak or dead colonies, noticeable dead bees in and around the hive, kleptoparasitism, etc. It is thought that CCD is due to invasive varroa mites, poor nutrition, strees, pesticide poisoning and many more.  Decreasing number of worker bees primarly first affects the hive and the apiculturist but the more affect is on the nature and we humans as 80% of our crops are pollinated by bees. Thus resulting in increase of food scarcity worldwide. Bee hive samplings of the causative agents, extending the research on the causes of CCD, restoration of habitats, maintaining bee health, decreasing stress are some of the solutions or preventive measures for CCD. Even though, the rate of CCD has now decreased we should not forget the importance of bees and their role in the ecosystem, as bees are our life.
