by Giulia Tavares Madeira Pinto | 19-03-2020 06:50

Hey everyone!

The thematic topic of this month is: "people who have endeavoured to better the environment", and to explain this, I choose to talk about the brazilian activist Marina Silva.

Marina was born in the heart of Florest Amazon, most especifically in Acre state. Her family was used to work in the rubber plantation and she have done that for a time, but after she has gone to university to study History and postgraduate courses in Psychoanalytic Theory (University of Brasília) and in Psychopedagogy.

Your fight in defense of the Amazon started after she met Chico Mendes (another defensor of Amazon) and she has participated of the "empates", they were resistance against deforestation in which the rubber tappers and their families participated. Hand in hand, they entered the forest and made a chain that prevented the destruction of the forest. This was one of firsts acts that Marina has done for the florest.

In her politicy journey, she always have defended the protection of Amazon against the deforestation and was the first of defend the reducion of emission gases in Congress. As a minister of Enviroment, she has protect the brazilian biodiversity through measures, also created the The Chico Mendes Institute, to take care of more than 70 million hectares distributed in 300 Nature Conservation Units and the Brazilian Forest Service, dedicated to promoting the sustainable economic use of the country's tropical forests.

And, to finish, during her time as minister she created the Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the Legal Amazon, which included 14 ministries. Thanks to the project, the rate of deforestation in the Amazon fell 57% in just three years, from 27,000 km©÷ to 11,000 km©÷ per year. More than 1,500 illegal companies have been disbanded, with the arrest of 700 people. The seizure of wood added up to a million cubic meters. Through these projects, Marina gained prominence abroad and at the end of 2007, the British newspaper ¡°The Guardian¡± included her among the 50 people who can help save the planet.

I hope the trajetory of Marina inspire us all to help the planet in nowadays!!

Green cheers from Brazil!
