Organic Farming in Nepal

by Sagar Koirala | 17-03-2020 13:09

Organic Farming is the traditional system of growing crops and raising livestock without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides , herbicides and chemicals. It is one of the popular method among Nepalese farmers. 20 years back, most of the farming system used to be Organic ,but today around 75 % agriculture production is through inorganic way.
Organic Farming has lots of benefits ranging from good health, proper lifestyle, free from diseases, good soil condition, less soil and water pollution and good biodiversity. But due to increasing technology , rapid urbanization and industrialization, the farming system has totally shifted to Inorganic in Nepal.
Organic Farming incorporates use of Compost manure, vermicompost and other organic sources , practise crop rotation, plant based pesticides and fertilizers, biological predators and other technology. Despite claiming Organic status, most of the farms are still practising use of chemical fertlizers like Urea, DAP ,etc. The Organic Certification body is not very much active in Nepal. However, few municipalities and rural municipalities have started the process of promoting Organic products which is a nice initiative. Jiri Municipality of Dolakha, Belaka Municipality of Udayapur and Jumla Municipality of Jumla are few of the local bodies promoting Organic Farming within their territory. If many local bodies act accordingly then, we can bring Organic revolution in Nepal.
