[free report] We need to talk about the Atlantic Forest

by Fernanda pioli macedo | 12-03-2020 18:44

When we talk about Brazil mostly the first thing that comes to our mind is the Amazon rainforest, and few people know about the problems that we are facing another very important forest, The Atlantic Forest, that can be considered even more worrying. Some data says that while  Amazonia has lost 19% of its original tree cover, the Atlantic Forest has lost more than 80%

INPE the National Institute for Space Research found that 102,938 hectares were destroyed during the three years. The annual loss of 34,121 hectares per year was 2.4 percent lower than the 34,965 ha recorded from the 2000-2005 period.

Colonization and exploration have contributed to the area's destruction. At the begging of 1500, the Brazilian Atlantic Forest covered about one million square kilometers of eastern and southern Brazil, representing 12% of Brazil¡¯s total land. Nowadays, only  8% of its original size exists, according to the SOS MATA ATLÂNTICA and INPE.

Since the year of1986 INPE and the NGO SOS Mata Atlantica are monitoring the biome, that is  protected under federal law through a measure which has been endorsed by all 17 states in the region.

It is so important to restore this forest, that would help the planet as a whole by curbing emissions and also helping the wellbeing of the countries population, benefiting Brazil's biggest cities, such as Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, that were used to be surrounded by the area.

Changes need to be made and the situation in Brazil can be even more worrying than we thought!
