(Free Report) Student Association Movement to Reduce Plastic Waste

by Ida Ayu Mas Amelia Kusumaningtyas | 10-03-2020 21:53

Biotechnology Student Association at Al-Azhar University of Indonesia started a movement that aims to reduce plastic waste. The members of the association will recieve a fine if they are caught using single-use plastic. Biotechnology major students themselves are advised to lessen their plastic consumption. This movement is ambitious, by suddenly banning single-use plastic for its members. Habits such as this will change peoples lifestyle and hopefully for the better.

Change in the consumption of single-use plastic usually start off small. Either people bring their own tumbler or refuse plastic straw. This association however, ban plastic usage on its member in a single swoop without starting off small. Of course this is a great movement. But I have concerns on its sustainability in the long run. When there is no longer a ban on its members, will they return to their plastic consumption ways?

The things the association has done to support their plastic free lifestyle is by allocating water galon in the place where Biotechnology major students often frequents. It is hoped that these students create a habit of bringing their own tumbler. Not only that, but the association has also given out free metal straws. No matter the size, plastic is still plastic. That is why, I see a lot of effort put into this movement and especially for its members.

I hope to see good result, where the whole campus will discard their use of single-use plastic. But more than anything, I would like to see the sustainability of this movement.
