Challenges , effects and possible mitigation of landfills in my region.

by Anthony Duxell Malle | 08-03-2020 02:18

Landfills refers to as selected site which is used for dumping of rubbish, garbages or other type of solid waste. Landfills are the oldest and most common form of waste disposal of treatment.
While I was taking a walk around my community I came across a landfills which is geographically located between latitude N 4.029065 to Longitude E 9.177247.It covers a surface area of 78775meter square and received a maximum waste of 1000kg a day into the dumping site, the different waste type include ; solid, liquid and gas . It's showing a horizontal sealing system.Base on the challenges , there's is lack of trained expert in the operation of some the heavy machines, Also, there's usual break down and mechanical failures of most of the machines. Again, there's no sorting of the waste from th source of generation. In addition, there is no equipment used in monitoring the quantity of gases release most especially methane gas and lastly there's ground water contamination.
The different challenges gave rise to following effects which where taken note of . Some which include . There's little orno data collection, characterisation of waste is very difficult since the waste are not well sorted, air pollution mostly caused by excess release of methane and carbon dioxide gases etc.
If these solutions can be applicable then we can assured that the effects and challenges will be reduced;- A barrier system should be well constructed with provisions for appropriate leachate and gas collection system which will minimize atmospheric pollution especially Methane and carbon dioxide gas which could rather be used for energy production.
-Degradable waste can be composted and use as manure to increase soil fertility thereby increasing the plant growth.
-Waste sorting will cause the creation of jobs for the local people and as a result it will increase the quality of each type of waste for example organic waste, plastic ,bottles ,recyclable and reusable waste. Also, sorting will also reduce the amount of waste for final disposal at landfill and can ease waste treatment before final disposal.
Thanks Tunza for such an opportunity .
