by Binita Suwal | 07-03-2020 15:37

Well, well is a quite popular word we use, with multi-meaning. As a noun in oxford dictionary, well is a deep hole in the ground from which people obtain water with sides usually covered with bricks or stones. It is created in the ground by digging, driving or drilling to access liquid resource.

Dhunge dharas literally means stone spout. It is traditional stone drinking fountain consisting of intricately carved stone waterways through which water flows.

Both of these are the supportive sources of underground water that make lives of people easier. Not only for water, it is also important for its beauty and architecture.

Joyful moment begins when we stand for a queue and pull water out of the well through bucket tied with rope . We all know how ground water is purified and collected in these sources. Water passes through small pores of a layer of rock and soil is its simple mechanism.

Ground water pollution is the main problem that makes people to hate these beautiful water sources. Lack of proper sanitation measures, improperly placed wells, can lead the pure water contaminated with pathogens. Overdose of fertilizers, other toxins that leached into the well. Empty wells and dharas are due to urbanization that make ground water recharge impossible. Dug wells and dhunge dharas are the most contaminated with nitrate, but generally have low levels of irons. Among 573 dhunge dharas, more than its half now contain either polluted water or is empty.
