TECHNOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENT

by Israel Adeoye | 26-02-2020 01:24

With the problems associated with water resources, there have been scientific approaches and technological innovations to tackling them. Groundwater contamination has been a very serious environmental issue which has been addressed with various scientific and technological approaches.

However, we hear more of these environmental problems than the approaches. As difficult as it is to completely remediate contaminated groundwater at a particular region, there have been improved and recommendable technological developments towards addressing it.

Remediation of contaminated Groundwater most times, involves combination of of technologies and depending on the scope of this activity, it can in-situ or ex-situ. The most widely used technologies are physical, biological, chemical and combination of the mentioned technologies. Among others, various types of these remediation technologies are listed below.

1. Excavation
2. Containment
3. Pump and Treat Method
4. Chemical Reduction
5. Chemical Oxidation
6. Bioremediation

The application of some of the above mentioned remediation methods depends largely on the nature of contamaminat, geotechnical and hydrological properties of the site, extent of remediation and cost implications.

Further reading and research are recommended for the suitability of one remediation technology from the other and the scientific importance of each one.

Conclusively, as it is necessary to know that despite the technical difficulties, continued efforts and scientific researches are being done on improving the existing remediation methods and development of better ones.
