Thematic Report: Technology and Environment

by Okoth Okoth | 18-02-2020 20:32

Not on one or two occassions have we used scientific data on climate issue without knowing its source. NASA is a world leader in climate studies and earth science. It makes robust scientific data information available to the public, policy makers, environmental activists, decision makers and scientific and planning agencies around the world.

NASA uses complicated technology in observing earth from a global perspective in an immersive, 3-D movement. For example, NASA¡¯s satellite called ¡°Eyes on the Earth,¡± monitors our planet vital signs such as sea level height, Antarctic ozone and atmospheric carbon monoxide concentration. Moreover, it spots volcanic eruptions and forest fires using the carbon monoxide vital signs and also traces the movement of water around the globe using the gravity map from NASA¡¯s GRACE satellites. This technology is really contributing to early warning in cases of disaster.

How would we know and study Earth events without such technology? ¡°Eyes on Earth¡± has set a pace in quantifying, understanding and understanding how climate change affects our planet. This information is then used by policy makers in planning and developing policies that helps in mitigation.

Technology plays a vital role in environment conservation. It is a uniting factor to change makers who are keen in addressing climate change and global warming. Technology helps us get scientific data needed to understand vital signs of planet Earth.
