Technology is fundamentally changing the way we live. Work, relate to one another and to the external world. It has made our lives easier and solved the most complicated problems for us. The next big problem that stands before us is that of the environmental changes we face. Now more than ever, the advent of new technology has the potential to transform environmental protection. In this article, I would like to share positive side of technology and talk about some of the technologies that are helping us save our environment.

Smart Devices for Homes- Smart devices for homes and offices are the perfect example of positive side of technology. All of us must have heard about the smart devices that not only simplify our lives but also to save the environment. For instance, these devices can send you an email if the door of your refrigerator is ajar and help you shut off power to devices that aren’t in use. Smart bulbs are also example of smart devices.

Saving endangered wildlife- It is hard to think of technology and nature together but even advances like Artificial Intelligence, Drones, Remote sensing, and thermal imaging help us save forest and wildlife by monitoring forest health, detect illegal logging and poaching etc.

Solar Glass- Few days back I read an article about Solar Glass, which can work as a replacement of skyscraper glass. Just imaging if every window in a skyscraper could generate energy. Yes, that’s the promise of solar glass. It can be used as a transparent window material and at the same time it will also capture sun’s energy and converts it into electricity.

E-material in place of printed materials- E-materials are another wonderful example of technology that help us save our environment. It offers an alternative to pen and paper for communication and projects and an alternative to printed materials.

These are some of the examples of how technology can help us save environment but everything has its pros and cons. Afterall, all these inventions are science and it is up to us whether we want to use this science for our development or destruction. Technology and Environment topic is very debatable, we can’t say that these technologies can make our environment as it used to be and solve all the environmental problems and crisis we are facing right now but they do have a ability and capacity to make things slightly better and I truly believe that such small initiatives and actions can make a big difference.
