Smart dustbin, Nepalese approach to stop pollution

Not long ago I used to think environment and technology are separate entity. After an idea hit me my whole prospective changed. This happened in the street of Kathmandu, where I was walking to my office. Smart dustbins were installed beside the road. The setup was simple, it has a display up front which shows the current air pollution and temperature reading. Two pockets below are actual bins separate for degradable and non-degradable waste. Every time I move across it, it makes me think about air pollution and what we can do to mitigate the problem. Each dustbin costs around NRS 6,000 equivalent to $60, which is funded by a private firm and maintained by metropolitan city. The concept of smart dustbin is unique in itself and adds to the beauty. They are put in 70 different locations and are likely to increase in number if everything goes as planned.

This is a simple idea how technology can help us to achieve a better future. With right use of technology, we can plan and proceed better. This is the era of science and need urgent repair to our environment. With tight tool it is very much possible we fix the process whole faster.
