Income earning environmental projects for students

by Mufaro Zibanai | 31-01-2020 22:21

Apologies for a late January report. The reason for a late report is that I wanted to post an event that I planned to execute at a local school discussing climate change matters but it did not took place as planned because of circumstances beyond my control. I changed my event to street campaigns on one-to-one campaigns teaching learners about the environment.  I will post a report on that for another day with all details.

What you hear when you are in the streets of Zimbabwe are hard economic conditions and the drought. All this has great effects  on the education sector as the fees were raised to the extent that there are not affordable to low- middle class. An example is of primary education which had a fee of $50 ZWL being raised to $750 ZWL, the new fee is not affordable to all Zimbabweans as some people's salaries are as little as $300. SDG 2030 mention about equal access to education by everyone with the aim of free primary education.

With the problem at hand, I with the aid of friends I designed a solution to help the learners to have access to education through environmental programmes. Firstly,  we designed programme of plastic picking to earn some cash to reduce the levies. At a local school we suggested that every class have a large bin where they will place their collected refuse. Every students bring plastic bottles and any recyclable materials and put them in a bin, meaning the students will move around the school and the local areas in search of the materials on their free time. At their homes any used up plastic are brought to the school. After every week they will sell the collected plastic for cash and have money to buy books, sundries, and food at class level that is enjoyed by everyone. This is beneficial to the environment as it helps in cleaning the environment.

More so, another project is water harvesting,  as the country is facing a drought therefore we need to store our water for later use. In a pilot project we harvested the water with buckets when ever it rains. The harvested water is later used for gardening as they water their nursery beds. The nursery is then sold to the community for money. The bio degradable waste is used for manuring the nursery as it is collected from the student made compost at the school. Adding on the manure can be sold to the community for money.

In conclusion we are doing whatever we can to combat the economic conditions brought problems with the environmental help. The projects will prosper when they are supported with aids such as more containers and health safety clothing. Zimbabwe at heart as we strive to vision 2030, and towards the SDGs 2030.
