Monthly topic: Environmental issues in a film- THE LORAX

by DAVID CHAPOLOKO | 30-01-2020 13:57

Knowing my love for nature, one day I reached home and found my niece had secured for me from her friends a Cartoon called the Lorax. She told me she watched it and she felt I was going to like it because it was all about the things I like to her talk about.

It is true, the moment i opened it, it was exactly as she had put it. Probably the best environmental movie I have ever watched. The Lorax is a movie that depicts a deep imagination of life without trees. A world of plastics.

It is a story about how a certain city got rid of all the trees and replaced them with artificial trees. Everything was made out of plastic. And because of that, a man who was behind this idea had personal interests to become rich because he was sure it was the only way he could sell oxygen to people and acquire the riches and firm he ever wanted. It took a young boy who went and found the Lorax, to reverse the situation

Funny as this cartoon may sound, it addresses key environmental issues the world is facing today. We are slowly but sure replacing nature with artificial objects. Plastics and the internet is taking over nature. Well it may be nice if the intention is to save trees. But getting rid of trees and replacing nature's beauty with artificial objects makes the future of life more questionable. In most cities today, artificial grass is trending. Most homes would prefer artificial flowers. Meanwhile human settlements continue to expand on the Earth's surface with no hope if replacing the displaced trees.

Some industries may even take advantage of the trend of the day because they know for sure that it's a great business venture. Who doesn't want to have their house beautified with those artificial deco? People don't want to water plants anymore but they still need something similar to nature's beauty around them.

Today most animals tree species can only be watched on YouTube videos, in films, on social media, on pictures in local museums and art galleries. Most of them are now history while a few remnant pecies are threatened for extinctions. We are confortable to see them there hanging on pictures and videos forgetting that nothing digital is real. In real life, the story may be different. Little by the day they are shrinking in number and a few seem to care.

We shall realise when we have run out of the essential benefits that only nature can offer us. Climate change is here because of how mankind has prioritised commerce and trade over nature.

We need the Lorax of the day, to speak for the trees. To take the world back into history and correct it from where we got it all wrong. We need to take the world back at the cross roads, where we decided to allow machines to take down the trees and create us what we thought would be a paradise without nature encrypted in it. At the cross roads where we ma're the wrong choice to think of trees as a commodity to make us rich without even without replacement.

Before we begin to buy oxygen, before we start teaching our children about animals and trees that once were there and now are No more, only on pictures and films. Can we encourage the love of nature to reign again in the hearts of our people. Can inspire people to live in harmony with nature again. That nature is not primitive but a life style.

Let's continue being the Lorax. Speaking for the trees. And the world will smile again.

Green Cheers.
