The Cycle's Dream

by Chitwan C | 29-01-2020 21:44

From recycling to eating healthy, books these days cover a wide variety of genres. As the world faces its biggest environmental crises in the present day, it is vital to inculcate more knowledge about these concern in everyone. And what better than books and movies to do so. While over the course of time, I've come across several enlightening books and films, I'll discuss about one such book that discusses the issue of pollution in the most unique way possible. A children's book by nature, it gives out an important message that even adults need to contemplate on.

'The Cycle's Dream', written by Prabhat and illustrated by Bidyut Rai is a story of a bicycle that dreams to become a motorcycle. The little cycle dreams of leading life like a motor bike, vrooming through landscapes, the "cooler" version of what the cycle's life was. The book manages to highlight vehicular pollution, how it is not environment friendly unlike what cycle usually are. It points out 'what you want might not be what is needed' exactly the way that the cycle might want to be a motorbike but the environment doesn't need that.

But like every nook, there is light at the end of the tunnel here as well. The bicycle realises how wrong it is for it to dream of being a motorcycle. All negative aspects of being a motorcycle hits home and it gives up its dream. The cycle wishes to lead an eco-friendly life. The book narrates the scenario where all the oil in the world gets finished and it has nowhere to go. That is how it realises the need for it to be a non fuel consuming vehicle. The subtlety of the book makes it a beautifully crafted narrative of today's environmental issue.
