The Existence of Bee

by Ida Ayu Mas Amelia Kusumaningtyas | 21-01-2020 14:57

I recently did an essay on bees for a class, and it reminded me of the film ¡®Bee Movie'. I¡¯m left awestruck as I realize that the film I watched as a kid, had showed how important the role of a bee is. Although there were some factors in the film that were incorrect, such as talking bees. But it is a film after all. You cannot expect 100% accuracy.

The film talks about a bee named Barry who¡¯d like to see the outside world. So in an opportunity, he does so. He then learned that bee¡¯s honey has been continuously stolen by the humans. In a trial against human, the bees had won the case where they get to keep their honey. When they got to keep their honey, there was no need to go outside anymore. There was no need to collect honey as well as pollinate the flowers. What happened in return was that the plants started dying. Here we can see the important role of the bees. They play a part in spreading pollen so that all sorts of plants as well as crops can live. When Barry realized this, he then gathered up the bees and began to pollinate the plants again. Thus a happily ever after where the plants were revitalized.

Speaking of bees role in pollinating plants, it also reminded me of another story. In an environmental program, I had the chance to meet and learn with people who grew plants on rooftops. They grew crops and vegetables. While gardening, they had their trial and error. They forgot the most vital part in gardening, which are flowers. They realized they needed to grow flowers in order to attract bees so that the plants can be pollinated. This knowledge had stuck to me. So while my mother has a garden full of vegetables, I ask that there be flowers to attract the bees. Of course there are other factors in growing a plant, such as fertilizer, sunlight, and water. But I¡¯d just like to highlight that bees are really important. Factors such as pesticides in agriculture, parasites, as well as climate change has an effect in making the bee's population decline. Taking this into account, I think that it¡¯s really important to remember a bees contribution and how much of a loss we will be at if they were to disappear. So appreciate bees a lot more, and plant lots of flowers if you can.
