Thematic Report – Marine Life – Over-fishing

WWF defines Over-fishing as, ¡°Over-fishing occurs when more fish are caught than the population can replace through natural reproduction. Gathering as many fish as possible may seem like a profitable practice, but over-fishing has serious consequences.

It is estimated that if the current levels of over-fishing continues, the edible fish will vanish from the ocean in 40 years. The fishing fleets are much higher in numbers than the oceans can sustain thus it causes more fish to be caught. Atlantic Halibut, the Monkfish, all sharks, and Blue Fin Tuna are basically threatened by over-fishing. Nearly one thirds of total fish population is over-fished.

When too many fish are taken out of the ocean it creates an imbalance that can erode the food web and lead to a loss of other important marine life, including vulnerable species like sea turtles and corals.
In order to contain this menace we must create more protected areas for marine life. Stop trawling [this was explained in detail by our mentor]. Traditional fishing methods are more sustainable. By educating the people over-fishing may be curbed. Further by raising awareness & spreading campaigns this may be controlled.

I firmly believe that our generation is blessed with technology that strengths us to do the impossible.  We have the power, will & we share responsibility. Many such menaces may be controlled if there is will to contain this. Making laws & rules is one aspect but taking responsibility is the key to success. So, friends lets join the hands together and make fishing a sustainable business.
