[Thematic Report] [Environmental Issues in Films and Books]

by Jaewon Chang | 20-01-2020 19:46

While considering the thematic report of this month, I have been recalling a lot of movies I have previously watched. In this report, I want to talk about a really famous movie that I'm sure almost everyone has watched before. The title is Finding Nemo! Although it may simply be a movie that induces certain emotions throughout, I believe there were various themes, with the overarching theme of overfishing.

During the movie, there is a scene in which a large net is thrown underwater by fishers to catch a big number of fish (although this ends with the fish being strong enough to break free). Whilst watching this part of the movie, I'm sure many of us have been cheering for the fish to break free. Although this was simply a movie scene, it is a prevalent environmental issue that is being faced everyday. Overfishing can create an imbalance in the marine ecosystem, resulting in the loss of marine life.

Another scene in the movie presents a scene in the dentist, where a little girl is vigorously shaking a plastic bag with a fish inside it. The scene relates to certain aspects of animal abuse. Although some may argue that the little girl is unaware of the consequences as a result of her actions, animal abuse is another prevalent issue in society today. I believe it is essential to consider the ethics of our actions before performing them, especially to animals.
