BEES MATTER!

by Preeti Karki | 19-01-2020 15:52

The first thought people have when they think of bees is that they are stingers and are dangerous but many people do not know about the importance bees have in our lives .
The population in the world is increasing at a great pace. Increase in the number of people means increase in the demand for food. Bees are not only important for the production of honey, but are also important for ecosystem and production of food.
The greatest contribution of bees in the sector of agriculture is pollination. A third of the world¡¯s food production depends on bees, i.e. every third spoonful of food depends on pollination.Effective pollination increases the amount of agricultural products, improves their quality and enhances resistance to pests.Bees pollinate more than 100 types of crops.Bees are perfectly adapted to pollinate, helping plants grow, breed and produce food. They do so by transferring pollen between flowering plants and so keep the cycle of life turning. As pollinators, bees play a part in every aspect of the ecosystem. They support the growth of trees, flowers, and other plants, which serve as food and shelter for creatures large and small.
But over the past 15 years, there is rapid decline in number of bees.Climate change is one of the factors which is responsible. It causes some flowers to bloom earlier or later than usual, leaving bees with fewer food sources . Another reason is the use of pesticides and harmful chemicals in agriculture.

In order to increase bee production, we must use best management practises for bee keeping, grow wild flowers and replace harmful chemicals with bee friendly ones.

Bees are for sure one the reasons why we are able to survive , so if you see one, its better to be thankful.
