Things About Food to Take into Account

by Ida Ayu Mas Amelia Kusumaningtyas | 20-01-2020 03:21

As someone who has to cook for my whole family, I take it as a duty to make sure my family eats a healthy and balanced food. Moreover, I have to take my sister's diet into account where she recently decided to become vegetarian. Vegetarian is different from vegan. Vegans only eat plant based food. Meanwhile, vegetarians don¡¯t eat meat but they still eat fish, dairy products, such as cheese and milk, as well as eggs. Although, I suppose it all depends on the individual itself. The reason my sister chose to go vegetarian is that she wants to reduce her carbon footprint.

In the past, I had read an article on Tunza Eco Generation about food and its carbon footprint. A cow for example needs food and water to grow up, and then when it is time to be slaughtered, the meat would then be transported to shops. Fuel is needed for the transportation, and there is the distance to take into account. One of the ways to reduce these carbon footprint aside by going vegan or vegetarian, is to shop locally.

Furthermore, if you shop locally then the food you have would still be fresh and it is obviously a good thing. I myself love meat, so I don¡¯t see myself going vegetarian much less vegan in the near future. But since my sister¡¯s vegetarian, I took it upon myself to understand her dietary needs. On how the food she eats will have a balanced nutrition. I then learned about macronutrient, that are carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Those three are what the body needs to function. So I searched on plant-based
food that had these macronutrients, and cooked them for my sister.

Usually I would only cook two dishes for my family, but with the addition of my sister¡¯s diet, I now cook four dishes. Even though two dishes are supposed to be for my sister, we still eat her dishes. Food are just delicious. If it¡¯s presented to be eaten, then it has to be finished. That is also why I make sure I don¡¯t overcook, so that there will be no left over food.
