Free report :Status of Taiwan's Agricultural Development

by Yu Hsuan Huang | 24-12-2019 01:15

Taiwan ¡¯s agricultural development has grown from 1.6% of the country ¡¯s gross domestic product ratio in 106. In addition, in terms of international trade, agricultural exports in 107 totaled USD 5.46 billion and imports were USD 15.79 billion. The specific number refers to the data of the Executive Yuan. At the end of 106, the number of farmers and herdsmen in Taiwan was 775,000, accounting for 9.0% of the total number of current households in Taiwan at the end of the year, of which 718,000 were engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. ; The population of farmers and herdsmen is more than 2.78 million, accounting for 11.9% of the total population. Farmers and herdsmen's farmland ownership is 79.9%, and all non-owners (managed by others) account for 4.8%. In 107, the agricultural employment population was 561,000, of which the ratio of agricultural employment to total employment was 4.9%.

Since agriculture is responsible for Taiwan's food supply, what is the current state of our agriculture? The unit that vocalizes farmers in Taiwan today is the peasant associations in various places. However, in the 1970s, the peasant associations re-amended the "peasant associations law" and abolished the shareholding system. It has become for profit, not for farmers' rights. Therefore, it is not uncommon for agricultural traders to monopolize agricultural sales. Therefore, how to fight for the rights of farmers and transform the existing agriculture is what we need to think about, because Taiwan has a good agricultural environment.

According to statistics, Taiwan's agricultural production index in 2018 was initially estimated at 108.25 (100 in 2016), an increase of 2.43% over the previous 2017. On the whole, the climate in 2018 is similar to that in 2017, and it is a year with good climate. Only the flood disaster on August 23 was a more obvious natural disaster. Therefore, the harvest status of most crops is stable or even high.

In response to the low economic situation of farmers, the government's agricultural budget prepared during the past ten years has increased by 57.5%. The government's average budget allocated to each farmer in 2017 was 83% higher than in 2007. However, because the market information is not equal, and there is a problem of the distribution of the interests of distributors, agriculture has not benefited from rain and dew because of the increase in budget and the output value of the United States, Japan, and the European Union.

Well, since there is no way to change the structural exploitation problem for a while, increasing production to increase benefits is also Taiwan's policy for agricultural transformation. For example, the Agricultural Committee promoted the "large grain silo plan", hoping to replace imports with miscellaneous grains. In 2016, the area of miscellaneous grains in China continued to expand, reaching 76,000 hectares, an increase of more than 4,000 hectares from 2015, with a total output of 490,000 metric tons .

It is worth noting that the local soybean planting area climbed over 2,000 hectares all the way, with an output of 3061 metric tons, and domestic non-basic modified soybean products appeared on the market, which gradually became popular. I think the increase in sales is bound to improve farmers' livelihoods, but we need to implement policies that are more close to the people's conditions.

In the end, what farmers need is for the government to disclose price information and monitor the dealers for improper profits, and then provide foreign or local orders to help farmers connect with consumers. Only in this way can farmers have a livelihood and a stable and profitable environment.
