Small Acts Great Impact: Beat Air Pollution

by Kushal Naharki | 19-12-2019 18:02

I have successfully conducted an online and offline campaign on "Small Act, Great Impact". As the theme of this years  World Environment day is realted to Air Pollution, I thought of writing a motivational awareness story on how we can contribute with oir small acts to reduce air pollution. I believe innovation is the beginning of change and we can create a big imoact with our small acts.

A series of thoughts whirled, but all seemed to be delusional as I was at a strange place not knowing how I got up there; my mind tangled, vision blurred, surrounded by people coughing and sick. Although It was daytime, I could hardly see anything clearly as all seemed dark with dust, dirt and polluted air around. I was sitting at the stump of the cut down tree and I could hear the people gossiping beside me wrenching down all the hopes, shredding down to tears and saying Life could be soon extinct from Earth, with no fresh air left to breathe. Suddenly I felt like the cyclone of polluted air pulling me towards it and started running away from it. Although blurred vision with air pollution, I can see the people with masks who all appeared sick, factory releasing polluted air, many old vehicles running on the road producing black smoke and all trees besides roads being cut down with only stumps of tree as residual. As the cyclone of polluted air was about to trap me, I suddenly woke up to the beeping alarm of my clock. It was terrible dream that I had seen but It really didn¡¯t feel like it was just a dream. It seemed like our future if actions aren't taken now to beat air pollution.

As soon as I woke up, I remembered the stories my grandfather used to share me about the clean air in the village describing how healthy and clean was the environment then but clean air now seems to be just a myth. He used to tell me how a small needle can stitch the large torn cloth describing the great impact that can be achieved by small acts. Inefficient transport, coal-fired power plants, industrial activity, waste burning and other human activities are enhancing the air pollution. The effects of air pollution are witnessed by accelerated global warming, human respiratory and heart Concerns, wildlife endangerment, acid rain with devastating effects on our health and the environment.

We can't stop breathing, but we can do something about the quality of air that we breathe as we can be the part of solution instead of being the part of pollution. We can do plenty a lot of to contribute to human happiness by following several very little steps. Riding a cycle, using public transport, burning less coal are small acts to create a healthy prosperous environment. Imagine our very little and small acts will do most like saving thousands of individuals who die because of cancer or any other air borne diseases. We can together create a safer and cleaner earth for us and our future generation with our small act. So, let our action do some act of heroism and make this world a pollution- free, healthier safer world to live in.

Going Green is the best way to beat air pollution. Afforestation should be promoted as trees act as good air purifier and give oxygen. We can plant trees as indoor trees, on the side of the highways and barren line, on birthday and also Gift A Tree on Birthday which is my initiative where the trees are gifted on birthday rather than fancy gifts. We should promote ecofriendly transportation. such as cycling, electric vehicles and can take a public transport, rideshare and carpooling to reduce carbon emissions. We can increase energy efficiency through smart and safe drive, do regular car checkup and keep engines turned off when not in use. Fossil fuel plants are a major cause of air pollutants, and the less energy we need, the less we have to rely on those plants to generate electricity. The most basic solution for air pollution is to move away from fossil fuels, replacing them with renewable energies like Solar, Wind and Geothermal.

A small contribution goes a long way in the grand scheme of things. We need to focus on Reuse, recycle, reduce. Recycling of plastic rather than burning reduces twenty ninth percentage of worldwide air pollution. We need bring change in our behaviors like promote locally grown organic food that require less transportation, building our own kitchen garden, avoid burning leaves, trash, waste and other material. We should become an advocate for Clean Air. It is the change of awareness that creates an impact for long time. Let¡¯s tell people about what we know and find ways to promote and educate the public on clean energy alternatives. Grassroot education is needed in order to achieve mindset change.

Governments, industry, communities, and individuals need to come together as collaborative action is needed in order to achieve sustainable environment to explore renewable energy and green technologies, and improve air quality in regions across the world. Let¡¯s be creative to bring the change we want to see. If very little effort will produce a great impact then why to not act on that? I feel glad to see Aloe Vera, a great indoor companion, in my mini garden pot beside my bed with I have planted to purify internal air pollution. As I required to join my friends for the afforestation program, I was conducting on the occasion of World Environment Day. Instead of taking a vehicle, I took out my bicycle and started my journey with the deep enthusiasm in my mind that although a small act, together we are going to create a great impact to beat air pollution. Our small ripples of actions can bring a change to beat air pollution as small acts do have great impact. Together we can bring the change. Let¡¯s all work together to beat air pollution.
