An Opportunity for all

by Jaewon Chang | 16-12-2019 22:27

Near the start of 2018 in my freshman year of highschool, I founded a club that aimed to share our knowledge of mathematics to the local population. Since then, Math MINDS (name of my club) has regularly performed service trips to a local elementary school. In doing so, we were exposed with an environment that many others would not have experienced. We encountered students who slow learners, and found methods to cope with these individuals. We have applied for UNESCO accreditation in the year 2019, in order to be officially recognized as a club under the National Association of UNESCO Clubs in the Philippines. On December 5th, we were officially accepted as a UNESCO Club and I was invited to attend the yearly general assembly.

I was oriented with the responsibilities pertaining to clubs under the association of UNESCO, including the main goals of the organization. What simply began as a service club formed by individuals intrigued with the subject of mathematics now became an organization recognized by UNESCO. I hope to pursue my goals of sharing both the knowledge and love for mathematics to the local population.

Along with this, I hope to pursue projects relating to the preservation of the environment to raise awareness on global issues. Some projects I plan to pursue include the creation of belongings such as bags with reused materials. Furthermore, when providing drinks to the students with their lunch, I plan to provide reusable cups to reduce the amount of waste produced. The reusable cups can be made of a material aside from plastic to further promote the preservation of the environment.

Through my experiences, I hope to continuously find methods to promote sustainable living. Although I achieved this through the creation of a school math club, this does not necessarily need to be the case for everyone. I encourage everyone reading this article to pause and consider an interest (this could be a subject that you enjoy or a hobby that you have). Try to brainstorm methods you could connect your interest with resolving a global issue. This can be simply promoting the usage of paper materials over plastic materials. We all live in different areas around the world, and it is up to us to explore a unique method of spreading awareness to others about global issues that threaten our world today.
