THEMATIC REPORT: Will we be able to save the marine life from us?

by Mufaro Zibanai | 27-11-2019 22:36

"Will we able to save the marine life from us?" a question that only us humans answer through actions. Marine life threats are being created by people through their actions. We are not grateful as we should because without marine life we are nothing. Where we will get food and oxygen? Food for thought.

Marine life, or sea life or ocean life, is the plants, animals and other organisms that live in the salt water of the sea or ocean, or the brackish water of coastal estuaries. At a fundamental level, marine life helps determine the very nature of our planet. Marine organisms produce much of the oxygen we breathe (Wikipedia, 2019)

In addition we get food from marine life. Mackerel, sardines and prawns are high source of protein and where do we get them? Many countries their economies rely on these marine life through exporting to landlocked countries such as Zimbabwe. Around the world, over 15 percent of our high-quality protein comes from the oceans — which also provide the primary and often only source of protein for one billion people (Great Grub Club, 2011).

The above paragraphs clearly show the benefits mankind get from marine life but we in return, we have disastrous actions to the marine life. Pollution is the main threat to the marine life and it is killing thousands of  the oceans residents. Sea water is contaminated with oil and sewage released and we justify as signs of economic activities.
In addition our fishing is unsustainable because of the fishing methods we are using which exploit the sea. The rate of fishing is exceeding the growth of the fish thus in the end there will be a threat of extinction of other species.

On conclusion we have to stand as people to protect marine life rather than destroying it because our lives depend on them. We should opt for more efficient and effective systems in fishing, transporting and waste disposal. Let us save the oceans #savetheoceans movement, together yes we can. Robert Swan, "The greatest danger to our planet is the belief that someone will save it."
