Sharing A Bit About the Environment with Children

by Ida Ayu Mas Amelia Kusumaningtyas | 13-11-2019 01:40

Saturday, 09 November 2019, representing as Tunza Eco Generation Ambassador, I attended a socialization on how to make craft from waste around the environment.  The event was participated by children who lived near Dharma Suci playground, North Jakarta. The children were classified as street kids, where they are currently primary and junior high school students.

The children were encouraged to collect trash around the playground and turned it into art. The children were separated into three groups. The elders made a lamp creation from ice cream sticks, the younger ones create lampions from balloons and plastic bottles, while the littlest used leafs in order to create art or as a filling for a drawing.

I came to the event to explain a bit about the environment and the importance of throwing trash in the trash bin. The children showed great enthusiasm to answer simple questions I gave about the environment, that I even felt overwhelmed. They told me where they throw trash, and the types of trash there are. I gave gifts to those who could answer my questions, even though everyone got gifts in the end.

Before the event was closed, the children ate together. We used an Indonesia style way of eating that reflects togetherness. Food was spread out in a straight line, where the base used was banana leaf. Eating in this style is very fun and it¡¯s not a rarity in Indonesia since we prioritize togetherness or family values.
