Diversity means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. Genetic diversity is the total number of genetic characteristics in the genetic makeup of a species. Genetic diversity plays an very important role for the preservation of the genetic resources.

For A Sustainable Future For Genetic Resources, following points should be taken into consideration:

1.       Improve Policy and legal frameworks

2.      Integrate genetic resources and biodiversity into the development agenda and strength conservation and sustainable use

3.      Facilitate access to genetic resources and their related knowledge

 

Threats to Diversity includes:

1.       Climate Change

2.      Loss of natural habitats

3.      Environmental Degradation

4.      Effects of increasing population pressure

5.      Change in consumer demand

6.      Development and use of a few species, varieties and breeds

Mainstreaming biodiversity for sustainable agriculture and food security can be done through:

1.       Multisectoral approaches

2.      Mainstreaming in National Programmes

3.      Land use planning at community and watershed levels

4.      Supporting on farm management

5.      Networks, Participatory Assessment, Monitoring and Early warning systems

6.      Information Systems

7.      Training and education

8.     Raising Awareness
