Renewable energy

by Thawdar Aung | 21-10-2019 15:44

When we talk about renewable energy, there always come up with clean energy.  As we all know, Myanmar, developing country is still on her way to developed while implementing lacked areas. For energy sector in our country, we have to depend mostly on the hydro power plant which is one of renewable and clean energy form.

There are total of 27 hydropower stations which depend on four main rivers ( Ayeyarwaddy, Chindwin, Sittong, Thanlwin) to produce electricity. These power stations have installed capacity of 3221 MW and energy consumption in 2015 was 2527 MW. Due to increased demand, there are on going hydro power projects and estimated installed capacity is 41837.4 MW. As this summer was with the highest temperature in the history, our country suffered a lot in climate change and also in energy consumption. As we mainly depend on hydro power and due to severe climate condition, rivers were dry and many dams could not produce enough power and we citizens faced lots of difficulties in our daily life as we cannot study at night sometimes and cannot work effectively.

We cannot mainly depend on wind power although there are many potentials to produce it. At current, there is an on-going wind power project to implement in Ayeyarwaddy region and it is still in negotiation state and if it is happened, we can expect installed capacity of 30 MW. For solar power sector, I wrote details in my previous 5th month report.

There are many potentials in Myanmar to produce electricity and if we can use our resources effectively, we will be able to produce total of 100,000 MW only from hydro power plants. To make the best out of our useful resources, we need international cooperation and it is also important to definitely implement the projects. Owing to country's policy and current situations, there is a long way to walk to become the country that can be able to use its resources efficiently.
