THEMATIC REPORT: RENEWABLE ENERGY

by Okoth Okoth | 20-10-2019 03:27

Energy is the golden thread that connects economic growth, social equity, and environmental sustainability. With access to energy, people can study, go to university, get a job, start a business and reach their full potential", remarked Ban Ki Moon in the context of ¡°Sustainable Energy for All¡± initiative development in 2012.

Increasing society¡¯s use of clean energy, which does not emit greenhouse gases, is crucial to deliver the key goal of the Paris Climate Change Agreement, which is to limit the global average temperature rise to as close as possible to 1.5 degrees Celsius. In order to achieve the limit, more young people are needed because they form a bigger percentage of many countries population and they are mostly affected with harsh environmental conditions due to environmental pollution.

Without access to energy, thousands of major human activities would come to stand still. Medical and hospitals¡¯ devices, food production, security, industries, businesses and so much more would stop working without it.
However, not all the forms of energy we need are renewable. National Geographic has estimated that even with innovations happening in the energy sector, only 6 percent of the energy used worldwide comes from renewable sources. Coming up with clean energy sources is vital for fighting climate change and limiting its most devastating effects.

An estimated three billion people, 41 percent of the world¡¯s population, still don¡¯t have access to clean energy and technologies for lighting and cooking and about one billion people around the world, 17 percent of the world¡¯s population, don't have access to energy at all.

Young people engagement in advocating for affordable, accessible and clean and ensuring access to clean energy for all is essential. There are breeds of young people who have shown that they are capable of advocating for the presence of cleaner energy such as geothermal energy and wind in their countries and different regions.
