The condition of river water in Shesmati,Kathmandu

by Meena Pandey | 17-10-2019 01:20

I visited near my locality today where I felt very bad in increasing pollution of the river. The sewage and different domestic wastage were directly mixed in the river. I asked to the chairman of the locality and he told the reason behind that was negligence of the dwellers and also the concerned authority is lagging in making strict rules and regulations. The increasing population is also reason behind it as the increasing waste is not managed properly. Here I have presented some causes along with its mitigation factors .

Water pollution is defined as the addition of harmful or objectionable material to water bodies causing an alteration of water quality. Water pollution is also defined as the presence of solid, liquid or gaseous contaminants in such concentration that may alter the quality of water. It is also defined as the addition of water to an excess material or heat that is harmful to the living organism or which impairs the beneficial use of water.

Water pollution occur through different mechanism. Dumping of industrial waste and sewage into the water body, use of toxic substances in an agriculture, accidental spills from oil rigs ,dumping of household waste into water.
The waste we dump on water bodies gets accumulated on ground water and surface water, this will contaminate crops and cause disease to consumers and farm workers. Deposition of deleterious chemicals on soil also lead to loss of soil quality. Ecosystems are destroyed by the rising temperature in water, as coral reefs are affected by the bleaching effect due to warmer temperatures. Additionally, the warm water forces indigenous water species to seek cooler water in other areas causing an ecological damaging shift on the affected area. Swimming in and drinking contaminated water causes skin problems and health rashes like cancer, reproductive problems, typhoid fever and stomach sickness in humans. Which is why it¡¯s very important to make sure that your water is clean and safe to drink. The main problem caused by water pollution is that it kills life that depends on these water bodies.

Removal of organic matter through aerobic decomposition, chlorination to remove bacteria and suspended solids, precipitations of salts, desalination etc. during water treatment is expensive for polluted water. Avoid the use of plastics.  Provision of containers must be provided.  The household wastage should not be directly mixed in the river. We must be active and get involved. The  people must be aware by different programs and campaigns .The concerned authority must take apt steps immediately.
In coming weekend I determine to act locally among people for proper management of the sewage , drainage and the household wastage.
