Agenda 21: an international context.

Agenda 21 is a comprehensive plan of action to be taken globally, nationally and locally by organization of the United Nations System, Government and major groups in every area in which human impacts on environment.

 

Agenda 21, adopted by United Nation Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janerio in 1992, outlines strategies to halt reverse the effect of environmental degradation. In the context of increasing national and international efforts to promote sustainable and environmentally sound development all countries agreed this agenda, Agenda 21 the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development aimed in achieving global sustainable development, One major objective of Agenda 21 initiative is that every local government should draw its own local Agenda 21. Since 2015, Sustainable Development Goals are included in Agenda 2030.

Agenda 21 recommendations are:

  1. Poverty alleviation
  2. Demographic dynamics and sustainability (Demographic update)
  3. Sustainable use and management of land resources
  4. Protection and promotion of human health
  5. Promotion of sustainable human settlements
  6. Full integration of environmental and developmental issues in government decision making
  7. Protection of atmosphere
  8. Sustainable biological diversity (activity)
  9. Promoting hazardous and solid waste management
  10. Women participation in development activities
  11. Identification of financial resources and their mobilization mechanism
  12. Improving legal mechanism
  13. Safe drinking water
  14. Provision of social security
  15. Protection of ozone layer depletion and global warming
  16. Checking labor depletion
  17. Overall environmental protection.
